The Fon of Nkar of Jakiri SubDivision in Bui Division, HRH Fon Molo II kick started this year’s cultural week with the distribution of gifts to widows and orphans in his Fondom. According to the Fon who has put in place a non governmental organization to cater for the less privilege says the welfare of the widows and orphans are his responsibility.
The gift distribution exercise, that took place at the Nkar palace on Friday February 6 2015 shall after the celebration be extended to all the villages in Jakiri Sub Division. As husbands to the widows and father to the orphans the Fon says he ensures that their rights are not infringed with by anybody and has equally abolished obnoxious practices that infringe on the rights of widows in his Fondom. To promote education in his Fondom and to support the orphans in this sector the Fon of Nkar pleads with government to construct two classes to host the nursery school created at the Palace of Nkar.
Throwing more light as to why the cultural event is organized at this period of the year. The Fon of Nkar told this reporter that the celebration is in commemoration of the Late Fon Tumi Ntani his immediate predecessor. It began with an ecumenical service after the traditional rites were performed on the first day which was Sunday (Wailun) February 1, 2015 by the landlords (Ve wonghi). Fons from other Fondoms in Bui and Donga Mantung were also in attendance Fons and making a show of the cultural display. The Fon of Nkar told this reporter that during this period, sons and daughters of Nkar usually converge in the village to receive traditional blessings of good health, prosperity and fertility. He called on the people of Nkar to come home and develop the village by constructing good houses in the villages.
On his part the chairman of the organizing committee, Shey Njong. S. Njong of the regional Delegation of Secondary education, he says a number of innovations have been put in to the celebration. Following the terms of reference given to the various committees that were respected to the letter, the celebration met all expectations at over 80 percent success. In the past it was a preserve of the Tantohs but this year many other sons and daughters of Nkar from other towns were brought in to assist with the organization reasons why the success is overwhelming he said. Talking about the difficulties encountered in organization, the Chairman said there were several adjustments to meet up with activities scheduled for others that actually took place in another day. People expected on a particular days rather came in on different days warranting a lot of adjustments. In the future it is hoped that contributions would come in early enough to minimize the numerous adjustments. Given the rich culture of the Nkar people, there plans to erect a giant museum in Nkar where a piece of land has been allocated for the project. The Fon also launch a book on the heritage of Nkar explaining the distance covered since he ascended the throne.
