Cameroons longest serving House speaker since 1993
legislation, Hon Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, shall in the days ahead be called upon
to answer charges of terrorism at the military court in Yaounde. A suit against
the Honorable speaker was filed by a lawyer representing the Cameroon
Renaissance Movement, MRC, of Professor Maurice Kamto following the destruction
man made fire of his party paraphernalia seized from MRC militants as coordinated
and supervised by Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril in the presence of four other top
CPDM elite in the Northern Region.
According to the suit, the act of vandalism
on militants and destruction of properties which includes party T.Shirts, mufflers,
Signpost and other gadgets of a legalized political party is tantamount to act
of terrorism. The suit cites Hon Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, Minister Mounouna Fotso, Minister Taiga and two other top regime barons. After the case of Anglophone separatists
charged among which is act of terrorism, that of House speaker Hon. Cavaye
Yeguie Djibril and four others would be another major case to be entertained by
the military court.
Some militants of MRC in the North Region who decided to jump ship in to the CPDM had a field day razing MCR paraphernalia and other gadgets at a CPDM rally meanwhile Hon Cavaye and four other top CPDM barons and government ministers were supervising or looking without any form not conforming to the act. A video footage of the scene went viral on social media and has attracted many criticism and condemnation.
Some critics hold that the highly criticized law on terrorism may
trap the very lawmaker who has refused to listen to its objections by other
legislators who found faults with the entire notion as to who is a terrorist.
People are in jail tagged as terrorists for asking for basic social amenities
which could enable them live better. It should be recalled that Hon Cavaye had declared
sometimes that members of the certified terrorists (Boko Haram) are in
government and had even had his bodyguard arrested and is being prosecuted for
act of terrorism. Now he has to answer a case pitting him and an opposition
political party which headed by a reputed international jurist Professor
Maurice Kamto.Though reasons for burning CRM party properties in the Northern
Region is not known, pundits hold that the presence of Maurice Kamto’s party
with swelling militancy in an area that was hitherto considered a CPDM fief,
was a nightmare that Hon. Cavaye could not stomach. After Kamto exploit of the
Northern Regions, the Chiefs started speaking in a language that Hon. Cavaye
could decipher. It is even alleged that House speaker had to storm the Northern villages to
downplay all what Kamto and his party had planted. unconfirmed report states that he went as far as
describing the millet that Kamto had distributed to Northerners as being poisonous
and not good for food. The Chiefs
retorted that the millet is same as that which he Cavaye has been distributing
to them over the years and taking their support with nothing to show for in
past years.
The recent act of razing CRM paraphernalia coupled with
Presidential election coming up on October 7th, could be seen as a
desperate move by these CPDM top notches of the area to safe face in the eyes
of their national President Paul Biya. As every other Politician these elite in the North would anything to protect an area they consider their political stronghold.
